Camel cigarettes were first introduced in the year 1913 by an American tobacco company called R.J. Reynolds. There are well known for their quality blend of Turkish and American tobacco. Its creator Reynolds thought of developing a new product that would be more appealing to the masses than any previous brand. He gave his product the name "Camel" because he used Turkish paper to package the cigarettes.
Camel cigarettes when first introduced in the market were considered by everyone to be a mild flavored one. Camel cigarettes of early 20th Century were mild compared to the other premium brands of those times. But Camel regular cigarettes are pretty strong nowadays and hence many don't prefer them as a regular smoking brand.
The background picture in the Camel unfiltered regular pack which was first introduced showed a camel standing in desert, with palm trees and a pyramid on either side. The background is referencing the brand name of Camel as against the type of tobacco mix in the pack (Turkish mixed with Virginia). The image seems to have come from a famous Egyptian board game known as Hyena. The hyena has been simply substituted by the camel, while the background remains the same. And on the back of the cigarette case there is a different desert scene which shows some bazaars and mosques. Packs which are sold in Europe and some other non-US varieties featured health warning instead of the desert scene.
Camel cigarettes have sponsored many racing events as well. They were the title sponsors for the popular IMSA auto racing series from 1972 to 1993; the racing series was called Camel GT. Camel also sponsored many F1 race events too. From 1987 to 1991, Camel sponsored the Lotus Formula One team; and in the nineties, Camel sponsored the Benetton Formula One team and the Williams F1 team until 1993, Camel's last year as a sponsor in Formula One.
